Using the Phone – Saying Someone isn’t Available
If someone calls and wants to speak to someone else who isn’t available, use one of these expressions to say that person isn’t around. Use “I’m sorry, but…” to sound more polite.
You can say that the person is “out of the office”.
You can say that the person is “away from his / her desk”.
A very common expression is to say that the person is in a meeting.
“Her line’s engaged” means she’s on the phone to another person.
“She’s on another call” means that she’s on the phone to another person.
