Using the Phone in English – Asking Why the Person is Calling

If you answer phone calls at work, you might need to ask the name of the person calling. Here’s a previous exercise with phrases for asking for caller ID.

You can also ask the caller why they’re calling. This is useful if you need to introduce the call to the person the caller wants to speak to. Some useful phrases for this are:

Can I ask why you’re calling?
May I ask the purpose of your call?
May I ask why you’re calling?
May I know the nature of your call?
May I ask what it’s regarding?
May I ask what it’s in connection with?

Here are some examples of how to use these phrases.
