Saying you don’t understand

If you don’t understand someone, ask them to repeat what they said with a phrase like “Sorry. Can you say that again please?” Using “sorry” and “please” make your request more polite.

Or you can ask the person to explain what they said with a phrase like “I’m sorry, but I don’t understand.”

If you don’t hear what someone said, ask them to repeat it with a phrase like “I didn’t hear you very well” or “I didn’t hear what you said.” You can also say this if you heard, but didn’t understand!
